Taken from the US National Education Association (NEA) January 2007 cover story:
“Global competitiveness depends on students’ abilities to innovate and invent, not on their test scores,” agrees Yong Zhao, professor and director of the U.S.-China Center for Research on Educational Excellence at Michigan State University. America has long embraced its students’ passion, ingenuity, dreams, and ideas—none of which can be measured by test scores, says Zhao. Asia, on the other hand, has traditionally valued test scores above all else. Even where scores are high and innovative educational approaches are valued, as in Singapore, it’s still felt that testing plays too much of a role.
“Yours is a talent meritocracy, ours is an exam meritocracy,” Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Minister of Education of Singapore, said in a Newsweek interview. “There are some parts of the intellect that we are not able to test well—like creativity, curiosity, a sense of adventure, ambition….America has a culture of learning that challenges conventional wisdom, even if it means challenging authority. These are the areas where Singapore must learn from America.”
Another blow for too much objectivity in the classroom. Maybe our beloved scihi teachers can advocate this to the proper authorities? We are a leading school after all, so it is just right that we lead the pack in terms of progress. Speaking of which, here is Toyota’s recipe for success. It is a manifesto on innovation – not for the faint of heart, but definitely a good read.

we are always going to carry a burden of a passionate scholar… We learn from others.. but learning from them, is letting them learn from you………….//

hi proverbsthree
You woke me up. It’s only when I read your comment (and I know you’re referring to me) did I realize how far I am now, far from being an idealist I used to be.
I just wanted to share to you what’s in my heart, I’m really dying to go back to our country. Perhaps, I’d say my coming here in the U.S. gives me the needed opportunity to reflect on the real purpose of life. I have might have shared to you guys one time about the value of practicality. Well, being pragmatist at one end would keep you afloat especially in our country’s situation. But I know it’s not the real solution. But palliative as it is, it eases some of the gnawing problems especially in our personal life. Thank you for this wake up call. I really need this somehow.

i think the students of scihi need a reality check. seriously.
and so do the teachers. I remember memorizing and regurgitation as being so heavily influenced at sci high. not originality, independent thought or innovation. obedience and discipline was emphasized. But I can just tell you from my own batch (we’re currently in our twenties right now) that our valedictorian and salu now work at calling centers while others who weren’t top are in ateneo law or run their own successful businesses.
get a good education not just a good grade on a piece of paper. grades are essentially worthless it’s what you learned that matters most. I still my values teacher telling me that my lowered grades in her class were due to my elementary schools focus on english. I can safely say I’m probably one of the more successful people in my batch; having a high paying professional job in America. Your teachers don’t always known what their talking about…..don’t always obey them…think for yourself. trust your own judgements. In all honesty your teachers have spent most their lives teaching, they may be teh best at what they do (and really are they compared to the teachers in ISM or PhiSci Manila?) but their advice and guidance is only useful for being a teacher or in high school. If you want more, if you want to be more than that, to earn more, I suggest that you think for yourself. Blind obedience and memorization will only lead you to answering phone calls in the middle of the night in some mall.

hah… My first time in the wordpress…
I guess it takes time to adjust to this kind of topic. We do not learn only by studying but also by doing. We do not understand by just saying “I understand”, but also by creating our own thoughts of understanding as well.
We may be different from everyone else’s but we always have our own similarities. Once a person knows someone’s similarity to his own, that person will now understand that someone.
I guess I really need to specify things up…

now that the semester’s drawing to a close, there are several things i’ve realized since entering college:
1. a certain social teacher’s excruciatingly long tests WILL be useful in the future, trust me.
2. when i tell my new classmates that i came from science high, they first ask: mandaue science? when i say cebu city national science high school, they say “Asa na dapit?” O_o
3. the filipino we learn in sci hi is apparently unique only to our school – they’ve never even heard of the various “teoryas” O_o… so far i’ve yet to see the use for it… in short, filipino is not as painful in college. the same is true for english.
4. our ppft/psftt is greatly exaggerated. X_X
5. i really envy those from philsci. (subjective opinion – redundant, i know)
of course, this is only from my point of view. the circumstances can change with the course and the college entered into. so please don’t bombard with comments saying that i’m wrong!
